Has your Straw Fedora hat become lopsided or misshapen after being in the storage for too long, and you are wondering how to get it back to shape?
Perhaps you accidentally sat or stepped on it, or you found your straw fedora hat at the bottom of your suitcase. Yikes! Well, this post is for you.
Not to worry, high-quality straw fedora hats are famous for their forgiving qualities, so you can easily restore your beloved straw fedora hat to its former glory with these easy techniques.
-
Use steam. Most standard clothing Irons come with steam settings in them, and using the steam can help straighten your straw fedora hat. First, dampen and smooth out the hat with your hands before you place the steamer over it. If you are particular about uncurling or straightening the hat’s brim, you can lay heavy objects along the brim after steaming; this will keep it in place, long enough to re-flatten it.
-
Use your hands. Straw fedora hats, especially the ones with high-quality straw material, can maintain their shape no matter the neglect. Perhaps one of the reasons they are well-loved. If you find the hat squished in or misshapen, gently pop out any folds or dents with your hands. Next, you can stuff the crown of the hat with a slightly damp, balled-up towel, or with lots of tissue paper; either will do. Leave the stuffing in the hat for several hours or even days; this will help the straw fedora hat adjust its new mold.
Just in case you feel your hands won’t do a good job, you might want to stick to steaming.
Interestingly, there are a few important steps you may have to follow if you must get the desired result. Let’s look at them.
-
You need to have a standard iron with a steamer or a kettle. If you are going to use the kettle method, fill the kettle halfway with water and place it on your lit stove. At boiling temperature, carefully direct the steam from the kettle to the wilted misshapen straw fedora hat. An iron steamer can be used instead of the kettle. It’s the more conventional method but might not be as effective.
-
Whatever the method, understand that steam is scalding and could hurt you. So, to be safe, keep your hat, face, and hands at least 6-8 inches away from the spigot.
-
Allow the steam spread throughout the hat, from inside out, this will make the cap malleable and warm and would encourage the reshaping process.
-
Using your hands and fingers, carefully knead the hat to shape the crown into the shape you want.
-
It’s important not to oversaturate the hat, but if it does get soaking wet, allow it to dry a bit before reshaping.
-
Continue the whole process of steaming and kneading until you are satisfied with the results.
-
Finally, let the reshaped hat sit for several hours or even days to dry in its new shape, and if you are still not satisfied with the outcome, repeat the process again
